Historically the herb valerian has been used as a sedative and anti-convulsant, and has been found useful in the treatment of migraine and pain. Many people find it reduces restlessness and anxiety. It can also act as a muscle relaxant, and so may be a helpful remedy for stomach cramps and colic. Although it may be effective immediately, some people find they need to take it for a couple of weeks to be really aware of the benefits. It is thought that valerians effect is through its ability to raise gamma-aminobutyric acid GABA a calming neurotransmitter. High levels of GABA calm the brain and body, so that sleep can follow naturally. Unlike sleeping tablets, valerian does not leave grogginess in the morning. Because valerian works as a muscle relaxant, people with irritable bowel syndrome may find valerian beneficial in that it can reduce the spasms of the colon.
